The ancient wonders of Java with Siam Society

Siam Society has organized a study trip to Central Java from June 1-5 to visit two of Indonesia’s most remarkable Unesco World Heritage Sites — Borobudur and Prambanan.

Borobudur and Prambanan are monuments to the greatness of Java’s past civilisations. Said to be one of the largest Buddist temples in the world Borobudur was built in the 8th and 9th centuries during the Syailendra Dynasty. Built a century later by the Sanjaya Dynasty, Prambanan is a breathtakingly beautiful Hindu temple complex.

Both temples are architectural and artistic masterpieces that express the profound religious and philosophical convictions of the time. Symmetrically carved reliefs on Borobudur’s terraces illustrate the teachings and stories of the Buddha’s life, while the soaring spires and intricate carvings of Prambanan pay homage to the Hindu gods Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.

These two famous locations share insight into the diverse cultural and religious history of Indonesia.

These splendid monuments will be explored and experienced on the next trip, led by Prof Chedha Tingsanchali from Silpakorn University, along with a few more, in a region of history, art and spirituality.

These are Candi Sukuh, a 15th century temple famous for its one-of-a-kind shape with a truncated stone pyramid; Candi Cheto, noted for its well-preserved stone structure; Mangkunegaran Palace; Pasar Barang Antik market; Candi Sewu; and Candi Sari.

The fee is 59,500 baht (55,500 baht for members). Reservations must be made by April 17;
