Patrik: Chanathip’s comeback will strengthen us
Thailand attacker Patrik Gustavsson feeks that the return of Chanathip Songkrasin will boost the War Elephants considerably ahead of their first qualifying match for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup against Sri Lanka in a week.
Thailand faces Afghanistan in a warm-up game at Rajamangala National Stadium today before entertaining the Sri Lankans at the same venue on Tuesday.
“I feel like everyone’s prepared playing the two matches. We have been training for a few days and listening to the coach [Masatada Ishii] about how to approach the game. We have adapted well to this situation. The vibe around the team is really nice at the moment,” said Patrik.
“I am so pleased to have an opportunity to play for the national team. My confidence is increasing and I look forward to getting my call-up every time. I am going to try to do my best there in both these games.”
Patrik, meanwhile, said Chanathip’s inclusion will be instrumental in the team’s performance in both games.
Comparing this squad with the Asean Cup team, I can say that this team has more experience. Having an experienced player like Chanathip Songkrasin can help lift the team.
“Playing against Afghanistan will be a good test for our team to see our standing on Asian level. I think we can put in a decent performance against them. Ditto for the match against Sri Lanka. We want to win both games, the added.
A replacement for Thitathorn Aksornsri who withdrew from the squad on Wednesday, Santiparb Janngom of BG Pathum United, has been summoned in his place.
The Uthai Thani left wing-back picked up an injury during training.
